A Rich History & Culture

With its robust fishing villages, fishponds and salt flats, Native Hawaiians treasured this land called Kaka’ako. In more recent times, the area became home to diverse immigrant “camps” and industry, including the landmark metal foundry and machine shop, Honolulu Iron Works. At that time, the neighborhood was a blue-collar community built on hard work among emerging businesses.

With rezoning in the mid-1900s, Kaka’ako became a predominantly commercial district where many businesses would thrive. During this time, the neighborhood was seen as an urban core, with many residents displaced from their homes. Today, the mixed-use community is undergoing yet another evolution, with new residences rising up in the area, along with the many businesses, restaurants and shops that aim to serve them. Keawe Retail is pleased to be among the numerous unique and dynamic gathering spaces sprouting and growing in our modern-day Kaka‘ako.

Our Neighborhood, Our Kaka’ako

“Our Kaka’ako” is the special neighborhood that Keawe Retail calls home. With nine city blocks in the heart of the city, our community is like no other in the islands. The vibrant neighborhood is a project of Kamehameha Schools, a private charitable educational trust that aims to serve thousands of Hawaiian learners through wise stewardship of lands endowed by Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop.

Visitors to the neighborhood are treated to a contemporary experience rooted in Hawaiian culture and values. Arts, culture and creativity shine throughout Our Kaka’ako, making it a must-visit destination for visitors and locals alike.

A magnificent highlight of this fun neighborhood is its popular Honolulu Night Market. Held several times throughout the year, the event celebrates great art, live entertainment, local food and unique retail shopping throughout the Kaka’ako area. The open-air block party is a favorite among locals and visitors, drawing large crowds to each event.
